Why we have it on our site at all is addressed in our FAQs

All of our trunks are original manufacture, and so may have
various original marks from being used as luggage. We
choose to leave most of these in place as we feel they add a
certain character and historical nature to these fine pieces.
Although we sometimes forget this, the simple
fact is that trunks are just an early form of
luggage. This one just happens to make that
fact abundantly clear, as it is a Samsonite - or
rather a predecessor thereof.

We actually didn't know it when we got it as it
was fairly filthy and had several layers of paint,
but once we stripped it we knew we had
something extraordinary.

The name "SAMSON" is inscribed on the hasps
and the corners. (You can make out the "N" in
the center curve of the corner in this picture.)
Also once we'd straightened out the tag (it had been
ripped up and curled over before we got it) we could
clearly read the "SHWAYDER ------- FG. CO." and
"DENVER, COLO U.S.A." which encircled a stylized
"SAMSON".

Of course the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Of
course the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company
of Denver Colorado was started up in 1910. (So we
know the tag should've read "SHWAYDER TRUNK
MFG CO.") Turns out that the founder of this company
- Jesse Shwayder - liked the biblical hero Samson, and
decided to use the name to market the strength,
ruggedness, and classic beauty of his trunks. A couple
decades later he would change the luggage line's
name to Samsonite.
